En esta página está disponible la explicación de la formación y el uso del Present Continuous or Present Progressive, así como algunos ejercicios para su práctica.
Exercises on Present continuous / Progressive
Paco is gradually improving his level of English
Is Paco's English really improving ? Yes, it is. Paco is trying hard to learn English. He is making a great effort to speak English properly. Although his English is quickly getting better, he is taking his time. He is not going to private lessons because he hasn't got time. He is studying hard because he needs English for his trip around the world.
The most important thing is that Paco is enjoying himself learning English. He is learning a lot about both Britain and America.
In this passage you can find some examples of the present continuous tense in affirmative and negative. Can you identify them?

6. Paco's family (possessive adjectives)
Reading activity
Paco's family members
As you already know, Paco has a sister and a brother apart from his parents, Antonio and Isabel. Sonia ,his sister, is only 16 and his brother Carlos hasn't got any children so Paco doesn't have any nieces or nephews yet.
But Paco has also grandparents on his mother's side. He usually visits them because they live in Cáceres too. His grandfather's name is Sebastián and María is his grandmother. They love their grandchildren a lot.
Paco has a lot of aunts, uncles and cousins on both his mother and father's side. And there are other important family members in Paco's family: his close friends, Alex and Andrés, are like family for Paco. Friendship is important to him.

Tema 2, Paco always does the lottery:
Apart
from his family, Paco has got a lot of friends. They like football and
they usually play it at weekends but they don't like doing the lottery
every week, so Paco always does it on his own.
Fortunately, Paco doesn't have to share the lottery prize with anybody else. He doesn't really know what to do with this huge amount of money. He knows well his own likes, hobbies and interests and, above all, he is completely sure that he wants to make a tour round the world: he really loves travelling.
Paco enjoys going to the cinema with his friends. Action and mystery
movies are his favourite ones. He also likes playing tennis and
basketball at weekends. But his most enjoyable hobby is fishing.
Paco is very good at it. He loves going fishing with his father. Both
of them always do catch and release fishing, that is to say, they don't
take the fish home, they return the fish to the water. That is why he
doesn't like hunting at all, because you kill animals.
Now Paco has the opportunity to buy a great fishing rod for his father. In fact, Paco can give him a motorboat. The whole family can go fishing on any reservoir around Cáceres with it.

The Present Simple tense
As we have seen, when Paco wants to talk about permanent situations, habits, routines, daily activities, likes, dislikes, or even about scheduled events, he uses the Present Simple Tense. He also uses the Simple Present with verbs expressing possession, senses, emotions and mental activity.
What tense do you use in Spanish?

1.1 We like Saturdays (sentence structure)
Whenever we meet we usually have a good time. On Saturdays, for example, we frequently meet at 5 p.m. to have a cup of coffee before the football match. We like football very much. After that, we often go to the burger bar to have a sandwich or a hamburger and a coke. We never drink alcohol. One of our friends, Juan, sometimes tells jokes there and we laugh a lot. Then, we go to the cinema or to a disco. On Sundays, we are always very tired and we usually stay at home. But Saturdays are fantastic!
Tema 3. Paco is wearing a new suit
Paco loves wearing informal clothes. But he has to abandon his usual leisure wear for one day, because today is a special day. He has an appointment with the manager of an important bank. He intends to deposit his money in the most suitable one. In these cases, the personal image is quite important, so he decides to go shopping and buy a new suit. His sister Sonia and his mother go with him.
They are having a look in a shop. Sonia is helping her brother to choose a nice suit. She is looking for vivid colours and modern clothes. However, Paco's mother is bringing him formal suits to try on.
Paco isn't enjoying himself much. In fact, he is suffering because he doesn't like going shopping. In spite of that, they are having a good time.

Tema 4.- Does Paco have any close friends?
Yes, indeed. Paco has got a lot of friends.
Some of them are only friends, but others are really very close
friends. Andrés and Alex are two of his best friends.
What does Paco do with his friends?
Paco usually plays tennis with Andrés on Wednesdays. He also plays
football with both Andrés and Alex at weekends. The three of them play
in the same team. They play in different positions, since Paco is a defender, Andrés plays as a midfield player and Alex usually plays as a center forward.
But what about girls? Does Paco have any female close friends?
Well, Paco is a bit shy with girls. He has some female friends but
their relationship is different from boys. Anyway, Mónica and Marta are
very good friends of Paco.
Are they meeting together? Yes, they are. Paco, Alex, Andrés, Mónica and Marta are meeting now for a drink in a popular pub.

Writing an email
The introduction
In this section we use opening expressions and the reason of our email. We can also thank or answer a previous email which we received.
§ Opening Expressions: How to start an email / letter
How are you?
How have you been?
How’s everything going?
I was glad to hear from you.
I hope things are going well with you these days.
I hope you are doing fine.

§ Reason one is writing:
I am writing because …
The reason I am writing is because …
I wanted to …
I would like to …

§ Opening Expressions when we answer an email / letter
Thanks for you email / letter

It was so nice to hear from you.
Sorry for not writing earlier

Body
This is the most important part. Here we talk about the main subject and expand with details about the reason of writing the email. If we talk about two different things it is best to write another paragraph.
Intenten ordenar sus ideas en el cuerpo principal para que puedan desarrollar un patron lógico para ordenar sus ideas. Cuando tienen mas de una idea podrían empezar con: “First, I wanted to let you know…” Esto ayuda a que el lector pueda entenderlo mejor.
Then if you need to ask for something I suggest the following expressions:
§ Asking for something

TEMA 4: Welcome to Wales.
1. Paco visits interesting places.
Singular and plural nouns.
Reading activity
Our friend Paco is already in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales. He is
very
excited because he is going to meet his friend Paul again and he
has heard
that Cardiff is a beautiful city. This young capital has many
attractions,
ranging from the oldest to the most modern. This is because
the city has
been redeveloped in the last few years. Nowadays it is
also one of the UK's
top shopping cities.
Paco is very interested in Cardiff Castle. This is one of the most
popular
places to visit in the city, together with its gardens and
interpretation centre,
which tells the story of the castle in his 2000
years of history. It probably
started with the building of a Roman fort
around AD 55 and, apart from other
changes through history, in the 19th
century, an eccentric man transformed it
into a gothic fantasy. There
are gothic fairytale towers with rich breathtaking
interiors.
Paco is keen on different sports and, therefore, he has also planned to
visit
the Millennium Stadium. This place is home of the Wales National
Rugby
Union Team and the Wales National Football Team but it is also
used for
many other important events and music concerts. It was built in
1999 so it is a
very new and modern site. It is the second largest
stadium in the world. Paco
is excited about making the stadium tour,
which includes a visit to the
changing room of the Welsh National Rugby
Team and a walk through the
players' tunnel to the pitch.
Finally, Cardiff Bay is probably the most important development the city
has
carried out recently. Paco has heard it is a bit far from the city
centre but
there are buses every 10 minutes seven days a week. It is
located in the old
dock
area and people say it is unrecognisable from ten years ago. In the
Industrial Age, in the 19th century, Cardiff exported coal to the rest
of the
world from these docks. Nowadays, there is a large lake for
sailing and water
sports, and there are also restaurants, bars and
shops.
Identify the singular and the plural nouns that appear in the text:
Singular nouns: friend, city, capital, castle, centre, story, history, fort,
century, man, fantasy, stadium, place, team, site, world, tour, visit, room,
walk, tunnel, pitch, bay, development, week, area, age, coal, world, lake.
century, man, fantasy, stadium, place, team, site, world, tour, visit, room,
walk, tunnel, pitch, bay, development, week, area, age, coal, world, lake.
Plural nouns: attractions, years, cities, places, gardens, changes, towers,
interiors, sports, events, concerts, players, buses, minutes, days, people,
docks, restaurants, bars, shops.
- The general rule to form the plural in English is add an 's' to the noun, as in Spanish:
computer-computers
However, not all plurals end in -s.
- Some add -es. For example, when the noun ends in -ch, -sh, -s, -x, or sometimes -o.
match-matches
dish-dishes
bus-buses
box-boxes
potato-potatoes (there are exceptions such as radio-radios)
By Kapungo, C. Commons |
- When the noun ends in consonant + y, it is changed into 'i' and we add -es.
family-families
But careful! if it ends in vowel + y, there is no change:
guy-guys
- When the noun ends in 'f' or 'fe', it is changed into 'ves'.
shelf-shelves
life-lives
Irregular plurals
Irregular plurals obviously don't follow any rules. However, we can list them in
different types:
- Some change the vowel, the ending or the whole word:
man-men, woman-women, child-children, person-people, tooth-teeth,
foot-feet, goose-geese, mouse-mice.

Paco wants to know about British universities
Paco and Paul enjoy chatting at the pub. They are so happy to see each other!
Paul is studying Spanish at Cardiff University and he is very interested in
learning about Spain and Spanish culture too. Paco has realized that university in the UK
is very different from Spanish universities and he wants to know more about it.
Paco enjoys listening to Paul so his friend tells him about the education system.
Attending school is compulsory up to the age of 16, as in Spain. Children start primary
school when they are 5 years old and they stay there for 6 years. Secondary education
starts in year 7 (when they are 11) until year 11, when they finish at the age of 16.
Schools usually divide their school year into three terms, starting at the beginning of
September and ending at the end of July. They have less summer holidays than Spanish
students and fewer bank holidays but, on the contrary, they have a week off school in
the middle of each term, called 'half-term holiday'. In year 10 and year 11, students have
to take important exams to get their GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education).
At the age of 16, students have different choices: they can leave school; they can do
some vocational training for a particular job; or they can go to a Sixth-form College.
This is what Paul did because he wanted to study at university. This is similar to our
Spanish Bachillerato in some ways, but there is much more specialization. Students
choose at least three subjects and spend two years preparing them to take their A-level
exams.
Universities are very different. They only take the better students and the selection is
based on A-level results and an interview. A degree normally takes three years and
students attend both lectures (formal lessons with the professor or university teacher
at the front of the classroom) and seminars (small groups, where everyone present is
requested to actively participate). Students must take exams but also have to hand in
many assignments and do presentations in front of the class.

Students
choose at least three subjects and spend two years preparing them to take their A-level
exams.

Falso 1. - Paco is going to visit Ireland (Introduction to Going to)
Paco is on the train to Holyhead. He has had a wonderful time in Cardiff
and now he
has a mixture of feelings. On the one hand, he is sad to leave this city and his new friends
but, on the other hand, he is excited about visiting Ireland. Holyhead is in the north west
of Wales and it has a busy ferry port. This time Paco is going to take a different type of
transport. Stena Line is the biggest ferry company in Europe, and it only takes about
three hours from Holyhead to Dublin. Travelling by sea is going to be a new adventure
and this way Paco can avoid flying, which he does not like very much.
Our friend is going to see every place in Dublin, the capital city of the Republic of Ireland,
and then, he is also going to visit other places in the area. He would like to make some
friends as he did in Cardiff, but he was lucky to meet Paul. Maybe he has to travel on his
own this time. Or maybe not... you never know!

2.- Paco will use his euros in Ireland (Introduction to will)
While
Paco is on the train, he is thinking about the new adventures he will
experience.
Although he will miss his new British friends, he thinks he will have a good time.
He's also thinking about the long history of independence of this country.
The island of Ireland is divided in two parts: Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.
The former is part of the United Kingdom (it is one of the four kingdoms), and the latter is
a different country. Therefore, Paco won't be able to spend his remaining pounds from the UK.
However, the Republic of Ireland is part of the euro area, so he will use this currency in
Dublin.
The picture on the right will give you a better idea of the different parts of the island.
Northern Ireland, in the north, with Belfast as its capital city, is part of the UK, whereas the
Republic of Ireland is another country with Dublin as its capital. There has been a conflict
in Northern Ireland for a long time between those people who want it to be part of the UK
and those people who want their country to be politically united with the rest of Ireland.
Surely Paco will enjoy Dublin!

Symbols of Ireland
The flag of the Republic of Ireland has three colours: green, which represents the majority Catholic residents; orange, which represents the minority Protestant; and white, which represents peace.
The two main symbols of this country are the shamrock and the harp.
The harp has been a symbol of Ireland for a long time. Legends say that it has magical
powers. In the early 1500s, it was depicted on Irish coins for the first time, a tradition
which has been carried on until now.
The shamrock was also thought to have magical powers. When St. Patrick (the patron saint of Ireland) came to the island, he used it to illustrate the doctrine of the Trinity. Both symbols are used for many other matters, and the shamrock is used to represent Saint Patrick's Day.

3.- Dear Sonia
Compare these two emails Paco has read recently, the first one is an email he has just sent to Sonia and the second one is an email Adam showed him for a job application in Australia.
EMAIL 1
Dear Sonia,
How are you?
I'm having a great time here in Dublin. It's a pity Adam has to go back to Australia soon because we 're having so much fun! Actually, I'm leaving soon too, and I'll start a new adventure in a new continent... I can't wait!
Anyway, we visited Malahide Castle yesterday. It's not far from Dublin and it is definitely worthy. The gardens are beautiful and the castle is very interesting, with five ghosts included!
That's all for now. I'm meeting Adam again in town in an hour. Please email me soon and tell me all the news.
Take care,
Paco

EMAIL 2
Dear Mr White,
I am writing to apply for the Computer Engineering position advertised in the newspaper last week. As requested, I am enclosing my CV and a completed job application.
This opportunity is very interesting and I believe that my education as well as my experience will make me a competitive candidate for this position. At the moment I am not in the city but I am returning next week and I will be available to begin employment by the end of the month.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I would appreciate the opportunity to come in for an interview and to talk with you further about my qualifications and experience.
I look forward to receiving your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Adam Johnson
